Not All Of Us Is Obsessed With Theme Parks, But Some Parks Are Better Than Others At Trying To Ensure That All Visitors Have Fun For At Least A Few Hours Of Their Visit

Looking through some old photos recently, I discovered pictures from a number of expeditions to America. I’ve been to a few cities over there, and the one thing that I have achieved on every trip is to go to the local theme parks.

Of course, the best known theme parks on the planet are those operated by the Disney Empire. As a young man Walt Disney had a vision to develop a magical land where children and their parents could have fun together, and along with his brother he set about making his dream a reality. Disneyland in California opened to the public in 1955, and despite many problems on its opening day which resulted in a considerable amount of critical feedback, the park was soon making a profit.

The Disney theme park concept expanded in 1971 with the development of Disney World in Florida, which was renamed Walt Disney World by Roy Disney in memory of his late brother. In 1982, the Epcot Centre was added close to the existing Florida park. Epcot was intended to be a permanent ‘World’s Fair’ with specific areas representing different countries from all round the planet. Other Disney parks have been built in more recent years near to both of the original American sites, and there has been expansion abroad also – first Japan, then France and then Hong Kong which was opened in 2005 – fifty years after the original park in California.

I am not really the world’s greatest fan of theme parks, so it says a lot about the Disney parks that I have been to that I very much enjoyed my time there. My most recent American visit was to Florida a couple of years ago where the party was made up of six adults, two young teenagers and a child. The visit was mostly to spend a lot of days at the theme parks, although some time was also spent chilling by the pool.

We soon established a system of rising early, getting to the park just before it opened and starting off with the most popular rides early in our visit hoping to avoid the worst of the queues. Having said that, standing in a queue at a Disney park appears much less like queuing than it does in other places, as the queue areas seem to be the start of the ride and there are things to watch and do whilst you are standing there. Also, for quite a few rides there is a walk on/walk off strategy which means that you get to move every minute or two, so it seems much less like you are just loitering around doing nothing.

Personally, I would say that of all the Florida parks, I liked Epcot more than any of the others, but that’s probably unsurprising as it really is the park most aimed at adults. It’s great to stroll around the side of the lake moving from one country to another. Each segment is beautifully designed to illustrate the country represented – each of the attractions, all of the architecture, shops and food areas are entirely about that country. The countries represented come from all over the world, including Mexico, Japan, France, Norway and half a dozen or so others. And I was told that it was Disney strategy for the staff in each area to have come from the country represented.

Thinking about the rides in the various parks, I definitely like the flight simulator sort more than any of the others. The Spiderman and Star Tours flight simulators are my favourites, though I do love the Haunted House also (a far more gentle ride, but very cleverly done, though I’ve no concept of how they make the ghosts that appear – maybe some type of Laser eye beam?). Most of the people with me on that visit were utterly obsessed with the rollercoaster rides – the faster and more outrageous the better. One of the men was a bit unhappy that he couldn’t enjoy some of the rides as he’d not long had Laser eye surgery, and even though there were no restrictions as far as the park itself was concerned, he thought that his eyes were still a little sensitive and didn’t want to take the chance. Although I would have thought it was more fun to use the rides after Laser eye surgery, as you have to remove your glasses to go on them which then means that you can’t properly view what is happening!

Some of the parades are fantastic too. On some days we stayed in the parks late into the evening, and saw the grand parades which also included spectacular firework displays and beams of light playing round the sky from Laser eye slots dotted around the park. Just an amazing thing to watch and a great way to end a day in Disney’s magical land.
